Ballistol as a finish

Does anyone have experience with Ballistol as a finish? Like many of you, I 've used it as the manufacturer intended. However, I recently used it on a cherry wood mortise lock I built for our cabin. The result was a beautiful finish that was reminiscent of cherry finished with linseen oil and aged.

I've schmutzed about everything on my ol offhand shooter stock and saw no ill effects where the balistol ended up.  This includes but not limited to: bp fouling, linseed (leaded) oil, grease of many types, blood, sweat and not a few tears.

I must stress that this ol girl is a very plain Jane or John shooter, so a few dings here and there (and she has plenty) do not bug me too much nor the shootin!

I use it in the bore between shootin a few days, and in the lock although I would not spritz the lock with it for long term storage.  (Gets a mite waxey).

Of course thats just me and I am usually swimming against the current.

My question would be  why?  All you are doing is applying a wax coating with ballistol which you could do better with several other commercially available waxes.  (Try bowling alley wax).  Waxes work even better over a good varnish finish.  Ballistol is also water soluble so I am not sure how durable it would be as the only exterior finish.
