Imitation Gold
« on: October 05, 2010, 04:08:14 AM »
I apologize if I'm asking this in the wrong forum, please feel free to move this post if necessary.  Anyhow, I'm thinking about a project that calls for gold inlays.  I was wondering if anyone knows of an imitation gold that is soft, comes in sheets and could be used to inlay in iron.

Thanks in advance.

Fullstock  -

There is an artificial gold alloy named "Nu-Gold," which is moderately soft, and which I have used for "gold" rings around barrels.  The only problem with it is that it will tarnish and turn black if exposed to black powder residue.  The answer is to protect the Nu-Gold with lacquer, or use it in a place where it is not exposed to black powder residue.  It is somewhat harder than 24 K gold, about like soft brass.  Cost is really cheap.

I think 24K gold is about $1300 an ounce these days.

Silver is about $22.

Pure (999) silver is quite soft and tarnish resistant, great to inlay. Sterling workhardens much like brass does, and tarnishes rapidly.

Thanks Bill, that's exactly what I was looking for and I found two sources for Nugold online.  I was going to use silver and gold inlays in a tomahawk head, so it won't come in contact with black powder, this should work out just fine.

Acer, your exactly right, 24K gold is way too expensive right now for inlay work, but I still wanted the contrast between the gold and silver, I'll give this nugold a try.

Thanks for the help guys.   :D
