Martini Boyer (sp ?)
« on: November 06, 2010, 04:58:54 PM »
Has anyone ever heard of Martini Boyer ? Not sure about the spelling , I read somewhere several years ago that he was a maker of swivels breech rifles in the late eighteenth century . There was also a fine swivel that the writer thought might have been made by him . I can't recall where I saw this, but    I have never been able to find anything on the name .  Louieparker

Any mention of known guns by Martine Boyer ?  I have never seen one .  The earlier swivels are certainly made alot like Danial's .  But that would be weak evidence to attribute to Martine . But other guns have been attributed to a maker, when there are no signed examples to base it on ..  LP

Is that made with gin or vodka? Dry or wet? Olive or onion? Or, maybe just a twist?
Har har!

Okay, time to get a little serious here. Don't know if Jim Whisker published it, or not, but in a conversation once, he offered that Martine could have been the father of David Boyer and that the elder Boyer made many of the guns we mostly suppose were made by Haga, including some fine, early swivels. If true, that would account for David's good hand and certainly the swivels. Single shot rifles by him are not as elegant. Both lived in the area we think of as Haga Land and Martine was early enough. More research might clear this up.

I really think John is probably right !       What I have decided to do is attribute this rifle to Haga. Since he is credited with more rifles than Leman. Henry and Beyer combined , another wont hurt anything .    I guess no one has seen a signed Martine Boyer ? Unsigned rifles are the norm for that area so its not surprising ..   If they would have known how much controversy they were going to cause , they  probably would have signed them  ....  LP
