Miniature longrifle question
« on: November 16, 2010, 06:34:37 PM »
I have a question about miniature longrifles...are they generally half size
or is there really any rule of thumb about what scale they are made to?

T.C.,

That might depend on what you consider "miniature"...  If you're talking about a smaller Longrifle for a child, I don't think it would be half size.  Rather something with a shorter barrel and length of pull.

If you're talking about a true miniature, there was one at Dixon's this past summer that was about 6" long.  The Gentleman who made it escapes me at the moment, maybe some of the other guys here know what/who I'm referring to?  I think Acer or someone also did a link at some point.  Increadable work...

I am thinking about the true miniatures...seems like a 6" build is pretty rare and that there are not too many guys even attempting that scale...I saw those little ones, and they are indeed amazing... But I was thinking if there was an average, then maybe 1/2 scale might be close to what an average miniature long rifles scales at...anyway, just wondering...thanks for the help..

Don Kammerer was pretty well known for his miniatures, most of his were 1/3 scale

Here are a few of his, he also was in one of the shooting magazines for building a miniature Weatherby, complete with scope, and a box of ammo, he also made a 1/2 scale 45-70 trapdoor that turned out fantastic!

Hamler posted some of his work here. http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=10275.0
There's more pictures at his blog site. His rifles 1/2 scale and 1/3 scale. There was some talk about offering them as a kit.

Best regards

I used to make flint & percussion pistols & rifles 1/3 scale.  1/4 scale was beyond me. 1/2 scale seems a bit large, for miniature collectors, but some fine 1/2 scale Peacemakers have been made..

I don't remember exactly what scale these are, but a fellow here in Corn Patch builds Patersons, 1860 Colt's ,and the same converted that are about 2.5" long.  It's amazing that when you cock them there are 3 distinct clicks as the cylinders rotate.  Anyone who can build firearms like this certainly has my respect.  Cheers, Bookie
