Another Wooden Flask, "Watermelon Seed" Style

 I usually start two of everything, sometimes more, this is the second "Seed". It is a little larger than the first at
7 1/2 X 4 3/4 X 1 7/8ths". Body is White Cedar, tip antler, held together with glue and wooden pegs. Painted Flat Black, sanded back and stained, then shoe polish. The edges on this one are sharper than the first.

  That looks like a Queen Anne Horn or variation, first half of the 18thc in England.

Dumb question time. How would you get the flesh out of the inside of the coconut?

You could forge a scorp with a long shank to scrape it out. That would be my approach.

I asked my wife and mother-in-law how to clean one out without cutting it in half, they both said remove one end, sit it outside and let nature take it’s course. Something about the meat when it rots will pull away from the hull. Hard to understand the MIL with her heavy accent sometimes. There was also something about the dark ones were older and harder to clean.

Well, I drained the water from a coconut and cut off the end of it. Tried in vain to dig out the meat. It’s sitting outside now to let nature do it’s thing and praying the whole thing don’t rot. My wife thinks I am crazy.

 Those look like they are more of a flask for liquid rather than powder based on the openings. Maybe I'm missing something.

I think you are correct in this assessment.

I think you might be correct about the opening, it may be for Liquids, i always wondered about that,..  as for getting the coconut flesh out of the nut they were done when it's still young when the flesh is very soft and also the shell is easier to carve,..

My wife grabbed me an older one and it has thick flesh. I am finding that letting the cold winter air dry it out some is making it easier to get out. Every couple of days I go get it and peel some more out. Forming and attaching the spout is going to be fun. I probably won't carve mine.

Re these coconut flasks;
They always seem labelled powder flasks, but as the nozzle is so large, I wonder if a rum flask or whatever may be the real purpose.

I don't know much about the wee gourd-shaped horn I showed above.   I know it's English and was well made.
In another thread I could post pictures of it if you like.    The base unscrews for filling, and top unscrews as the measure.
18th VC for sure, but didn't realize it may be so early.

That’s one watermelon seed I wouldn’t mind finding in my mouth. So I could spit it out and use it I LOVE IT!!
