To reduce wear on the cherries teeth, the smith first hot punched a dimple in each meeting face of the cherry and pickled the pair in vinegar overnight, ( I would ). The cherry becomes a finishing tool instead of the main cutter. This is from Mechaniks Exercises circa 1700 and the technique was old then. Anyone ask EK how he does it?

You mean hot punch a dimple in each of the mold blocks, I assume.  Good idea; glad they thought of it.

That's it, just to get the ball started.
