First knife
« on: December 14, 2010, 05:50:13 PM »
I might be off target, but my idea of a large, Belt/ Butcher knife.  I used an old worn out Nicholson file to make the blade, annealed, shaped, re-hardened with oil quench and tempered. Kind of rough, but it cuts.  You should see my left index finger.

Nice job.  I love using old files like that.   Make more now!

Tis the season, wood stove makes a nice free forge.  I like to heat the house, make a roast and anneal old files at the same time.  Waste not!

;D ;D   I've done the same basic thing, only no cooking on my woodstove.  Then you can just leave the files in overnight to cool slowly.  test before grabbing the next morning of course.  Ask me how I know.  Ouch!

Nothing beats the feel of a handmade southern iron mounted flintlock on a cold frosty morning

I have one somewhat in that vein. Not as well made I think.

Your's is nice and sharper than mine. Sharpening is a skill I have yet to master.

Sharpening is an over-rated skill, my finger is still wrapped up in gauze.
