How long are those handles?

Thanks Brownbear, the handles are 8.5" long, I make them out of curly ash as well but I have sold them all.

Wow!  Just judging from my estimate of the head sizes, I figured those handles were lots longer.  Now this really is starting to sound like a "bag" axe.  What are the dimensions of those heads?  I see them listed in the ads, and you've got my attention now.

Brownbear, the heads are small as well and they measure as follows. 2 and 7/8" from the blade front to the back, the blade front is 1 and 3/8" tall, the back of the axe head measures 3/4 " tall.  The head at it thickest point; measures roughly 5/8". They are all just slightly different and the handles are as well.

Thanks for your interest!

Bart,
Nice work. I have a friend who supplies castings of these axes as well as a little larger size single bit a spike axe and a double bit. All nice "small" yet functional axes.

Curious here. When did sheepsfoot handles come into being? I'd heard they were pretty late.

I can't tell you how close I came to pulling the trigger on those axes, Bart.  It's a good thing they already sold!  Maybe it's in my head, but if the blades had been more like 3 1/2" for just a bit more weight on the same length handles, it would have been a done deal.

I know it would throw the "scale" off, but I couldn't shake the question of rebound in using axes so light, even for the small jobs I contemplated.  It may be an unfounded concern, but it's based on using too-light modern hatchets.

In any case, keep us posted when you turn out more, whether the same size or very slightly bigger!  It's great work and a very good value.

You can buy all of those castings at Log Cabin Sport Shop in Lodi, Ohio. They are quite small.

Brownbear, I can make an axe for you that is slightly larger to better suite your needs if you would like? I am currently filling orders from this site, like the ones that I posted. If you want just email me and we can discuss it. M40a1rifle@yahoo.com

You're going to be VERY happy jrice!  I just received mine, and I'm delighted.  They're even better than the photos.
