Original Powder Horn
« on: January 17, 2011, 07:32:39 PM »
I promised Tim C. that I would post some pictures of some original powder horns recently acquired. I will put them on one at a time in separate posts.  This first horn comes out of Greenbier WV.

A fellow that I know moved some cows for a woman over near Alta and stopped  at a house sell in route, that horn came up and he bought it and gave it to me for pulling a stuck ball from his rifle.  Capt.. I would be interested to know whiich of the bunch you liked the best. When the snow gets off, I'll send you a picture of the flea bitten grey mule that I bought, that you all helped me fund.  Johnny

Well Johnny, it's kinda tough to pick a favorite but this example from Greenbier WV is a beaut of a horn! It has those nice retaining rings carved near the spout that will hold about any type of strap you want to hang it with. The brass over the spout adds much to the decoration and it's green color and condition are tops. I like them all very much. I can spend hours on a cold winter day inside by the fire, rolling these around in my hands, wondering what the accompanying rifles and their other trappings may have looked like. I can't wait to see pictures of your mule! My wife just loves those burros!

Nice horn Joel, and it's even nicer that you have some history that goes with it.

Matt  13:45 to 13-46         "having found the pearl of great price, he went and sold all that he and bought it"     I could not be happier with the enjoyment you guys have gotten from these.  Even as economical as they were I doubt any investment in the county had a greater percent increase, and I imagine Joel will do jsut as well with them. jOEL, what's the top of the end plug look like? Reason I ask is I have an original I found up in your area yrs. ago that is very similar. It has what looks like a rope carved around the top and a simple staple. I have to look for photos or take some.

Tom, the butt plug is rounded with a staple in the center. It does have a nice fine incised line that runs around the base near where the wood joins the horn. It is faintly visible in the pictures. I look forward to seeing pictures of your powder horn. From your description it sounds a lot like a "York" type of horn with the fancy rope carving. Does it have a "crater" dished out in the center where the staple is?  Here is an example of a York style base plug. The brass rings are not a PA feature.
