images a-squeue!
« on: December 31, 2010, 12:17:12 AM »
This topic is here for the sole reason that I didn't know where else to put it, and it has to do with the educational side of this past-time.

When I drag images to my desktop, as in the recent posting of Wallace Gustler's rifle, some are great, and some are distorted...stretched lengthwise and useless.  I have been saving information for years from this site, but this is a recent annoyance.  Can someone offer an explanation??

Taylor, mine does the same thing when I save them to desk top, however when I save them to libraries they are ok.  I am using windows 7.

After playing with this a while, I find that the pictures that are distorted are sized differently.  I suspect this is done by the picture hosting site.  Nothing we can do about that.  I still get usable pictures by going into picture management.  I haven,t tried this in desktop so I don,t know if you can change the format to get away from the distortion while in desk top.

I'm not very computer savvy so I can,t  be  more helpful.

Instead of trying to move the image by dragging it, try right clicking on it and selecting the "save as" option. It will give you better control of were to place the image (for example in a specific folder instead of just lose on your desktop) and will probably keep it from getting stretched out of shape.

When you are dragging any image there is always a danger that you will accidently grab one of the sizing handles in the frame and distort the image.

That is an interesting observation Gary, and I thank you for the input.  I have not experienced the problem lately, but next time I do, I shall use your great advice.  I use a Macintosh G5 computer, so there is a little different approach required to "save" information, but it isn't difficult.

I have one image right now that is "squashed" if I open it in "Preview" but fine if I drag it from the folder its in to  "Mail". I have a Mac as well.
I am assuming Preview has a problem with something in the file  ? ? Never had this happen before and an image from the same window is OK?  I am using Firefox as a browser and its very similar to Safari, both are Mozilla based.

I don't think this is causing the problem described but so you will know: Most folks do not resize photos before posting but ALR forum software is set to allow a max of 700 Pixels (width/height) and will proportionately resize photos that are larger.

I agree with Gary, you should never use "drag and drop" to download a photos. Use the "save as" feature. I am not familiar with Mac/Apple so am not sure what the equivalent is with them.

I appreciate everyone's efforts to trouble-shoot this issue.  I have always simply dragged the image to the desktop, and then later, put them all into a file.  This distortion thing is recent.

Taylor,  I have the same problem, sometimes.  And I always use the 'save as' function.  Wish someone would tell us how to correct the photos already saved that are squashed.

Anything that was distorted, I trashed.  Not all of the pictures in any given posting were like that...only a few.  Strange!!

I would re-download any that you can. You probably could save the others using a photo editing program. Just take the proportionately thing-a-ma-jig off and manually move the side/bottom in or out until the photo looks correct. You might not be able to have it 100% correct but close.

Another option - right click or whatever to get the menu and then select Properties - copy the url and past it into a new window or tab and open it there, then save it. This usually obviates the auto re-sizing that some sites do such as here.....
