Spring problems
« on: October 13, 2008, 07:06:55 PM »
I am working on a cast spring from TRS for one of there lock kits
The spring casting needs to be cleaned out where the two leaves join
Any ideas on how to do this would be a help
         Thanks   Sydney

I assume you're talking about a bend too narrow for conventional needle files.  I'd probably start very carefully with a fine jeweler's saw to clean out any big burrs in the crevice, then follow that with adhesive backed wet dry sand paper that's folded on itself.  Folding it gives it more rigidity, still leaving it very thin, but with cutting surface on both sides.  I would also use thin pieces of sheet metal to back the sand paper as far into the crease as possible.

Grind the set from a hacksaw blade to remove the big stuff then polish with wet or dry.

I have had this problem filing the rectangular rivet hole in my patch box lids. If you have a grinder, take a needle file that is shaped like two ovals put back to back, if you bought a set you should have one. Take your time cooling it very often and thin it down on the grinder until it is THIN enough to fit in the crease of the spring. ... Geo,

Out of curiosity, how long did you have to wait for that kit? I hear they take forever to ship orders.
And be careful to clean up the cuts and grinds to really smooth or the spring may fail along any cut line you may leave.

Emailing is hopeless with TRS.  Call them, ask whoever is answering the phone to go and check that what you want is actually in stock.  If it is  it usually comes in pretty short order, if it's not in stock don't order it - I've been waiting three (or is it four?) years for some things.
