Chip out on top edge of barrel channel

I have a rifle built and am trying to finish it.  The stock has some knots in it and one on the edge of the fore stock ,next to the barrel, chipped out.  I have the chip and am trying to decide what type of glue to use to replace it.  I can only glue it on the edges because of the barrel channel. Do you think something should be used to back the chip in  the barrel channel, and if so what?

i would put a release agent such as vaseline on the barrel where the chip will be glued back in. install the barrel and use a C/A based super glue or good wood glue. others may have better ideas

I assume it is maple.  If so, you will need to stain the chip and the surrounding area BEFORE you use superglue otherwise there will be a visible glue joint.

   To do this I would use a good epoxy (Accra glass etc.) stained slightly darker than your stock color.  Use the supplied release agent, or spray your barrel w/ Pam cooking spray.  Lay a piece of light cotton cloth in the barrel channel in the area of the repair.  Coat the mating edges of the chip with glue and put some glue on the cotton cloth backer. Place the barrel into place and the put you chip back into place.  Use wide masking tape to hold things in place until the glue sets.  You can then trim and clean the repair area and it will likely dissapear with the finish process.

Simon:   The mark of a good gunmaker is to be able to work your way out of problems.   If you are going to use the same piece of wood to glue back in then I recommend the same technique that was previously mentioned.  However do not use Vaseline or Pam to put on your barrel as this will transfer to the wood and again you will have a hard time getting stain to adhere.  I use saranwrap.  It disallow any glue to adhere to the barrel and it will peel of nicely.   I recommend a good epoxy that can be colored such as Devcon 2Ton or acraglass.    Hope that helps,   Hugh Toenjes

Just me, but that is what I would use, the stainable glue. I have not had the luck, that many have had with the CA glues. So I stay away from them. But, if it works for you, the is what is important. I have a very good way of over kill when it comes to repairs like this. I would glue it in as has been suggested and then once it is really firm, like after several days of drying. If you feel it may happen again on this joint, I would thin the wood in the barrel channel and below the stock line and glue in a backer piece of maple. You may not need this at all, but like I said, I always seem to over do it.

I use Accura Glas liquid to replace pieces of wood that flake out of curly maple without any issues over the years.  I have stopped staining the wood parts that mate and use only the stain in the glue.  Once the glue seam has cured and worked down, I stain the area and apply finish.  Seems to be easier to finish to the point that you can not see it.  If you have the wood with none gone you should be able to put it back together and it will not be visible.

Thanks for the replies.  There are some good ideas there. I had thought of thinning the inside of the barrel channel and backing with something but hadn,t decided what to use. I have used stained acraglas on other projects and will probably use it on this.
