TransTint Dye usage
« on: December 06, 2011, 05:01:26 PM »
I've heard a lot of positive reviews of TransTint dye. Has anyone used it to tint finishing oils ? I know it is water and alchohal soluble but also heard that acetone can be used to tint  finish coats.

Thanks in advance

I've not heard of that brand but basically any oil soluble aniline dye can be used to tint finishing oils.   There are various procedures that I've read about where one can get alcohol solubles into oils but they always seemed complex to me and I'm not sure how low they are stable before use.

Yes, I have used it and I do like the results and the versatility of it. I have mixed up regular NGR alcohol stain with it as well as tinting (slightly) shellac. It is handy for tweeking other alcohol stains to get them to the color you want.

Hey! A post I can finally respond to!  I discovered just yesterday that Transtint dyes do not dissolve in mineral spirits (paint thinner), a principle solvent for oil-based finishes, by attempting to tint some paste wax with it.  It is however highly concentrated and as mentioned excellent in alcohol, water, and lacquers too.
