Books on Southern Longrifles

Can anyone recommend any good books on Southern Longifles?  I have all four of Jerry Noble's books, but would like to add to that.  I live in the Pacific NW, no reasonable access to the real thing. Thanks.

The closest thing to the "real thing" is the Library and Museum on this site and this forum and site.. Guns and commentary added very frequently and nowhere is such gun detail show, and in color and discussed!  Welcome.

Bill Ivey's new book on North Carolina Schools of Gunsmiths 1765-1865 is the most extensive group of southern rifles ever presented in one book.  There are hundreds shown in there, and they show a great variety, including a lot of iron mounted rifles.

Dr. Whisker's "Longrifles of Virginia" and "Gunsmiths of Virginia" show a large number of Virignia rifles and have a lot of biographical information on makers.  I think at least one of these is out of print.  He also has books on Tennessee and the Carolinas, and co-authored a new book with Wayne Elliot on Georgia gunmakers.  There is a post about that book on this forum.

Shumway Rifles of Colonial America Volume II has some early examples.

Wallace Gusler's articles in Muzzle Blasts are excellent as well.

Good luck

MagKarl,
1) I strongly suggest Ray's DVD if you have an interest in learning about Southern rifles.  I've listed the rifles he covers below.  He does a short explanation regarding characteristics for each rifle and geographic area.
Mind you, he's not going to win and Oscar for his riveting performance  ;D but it is fantastic information.

2) "Guns and Gunmaking Tools of Southern Appalachia" by John Rice Irwin.

3) "The Gillespie Gun Makers of East Fork" by our own Dennis Glazener

4) Foxfire 5

Just in case you aren't aware.  I see you are a new member.  Welcome by the way.

Don't over look the ALR library as a resource for reference material.

Geez - sorry Dennis - I neglected to mention your Gillespie book -  :o - I am glad to see Ken mentioned it.

It is an excellent book on Gillespie gunmakers and has detailed photos and dimensions for most of the rifles shown.

I am sure there are others I am not thinking of at the moment.

Hi all, don't forget Dr Whisker's book on Tennessee longrifles and their makers; also his Gunsmiths & Allied Tradesmen of Virginia is brand new and in softcover; Whisker & Elliott, Gunsmiths & Allied Tradesmen of Georgia. Cornell Publications has Dr Whisker's books on gunsmiths of Alabama and Gunsmiths of Arkansas. Last, Missouri is not exactly a southern state but Dr Whisker also has a book on gunsmiths of that state. You can reach Dr Whisker @ jwhisker@embarqmail.com

I forgot to mention that I do have Ray McKnight's video and have very much enjoyed the library here.  I thank you for the suggestions on additional books to find.

I've been lurking for quite a while, I don't post because I have a lot more to learn than to share at this stage of the game.

One more suggestion.  Jim Webb's sketch book.  "Drawings of Rifle Gun Triggers, Locks, Fittings & Etc. Observations & Notes".
