The 1" barrel will be heavier overall, dif. balance for sure as it will be more nose heavy,  but on a .54 I don't think there will be a real noticeable dif in recoil unless you are shooting extremely heavy loads.......  IMHO.

I had a 34" long 54 cal barrel in 15/16" I made years ago with a 1-66" twist.  The recoil in a half stock plains rifle was no problem with 140 gr of 3f & a r/b.  It was a nice light, handy hunting rifle.

You didn't mention length of barrel, Walt or gun design.

I would say a 1", .54 at 42" straight octagonal might be too heavy for some people, however a 34" X 1" X .54 would be perfect for a 1/2 stocked nrifle. In the first example, the 15/16" (in flint only) might be better for most people, whereas in the second, the 15/16" would be too light - for me
I'm the little 235 pounder in the green parka, (group picture) that Taylor posted of our shooting yesterday.

A patent breech 15/16" .54 would probably be just fine.

I'de agree with what most others have said. I have a 15/16" X 39" .54 cal. G.M. It's a  York Co. (nice straight wide butt) cherry full stock that finished at about 9 1/4 lb. Very solid off the bags and not bad to carry hunting, nor is it too muzzle heavy. With a good hunting load of 90-100 gr. it's not uncomfortable to shoot. However I don't think I would ever go with a heavier 1"-.54 cal., unless the max. length would be around 32"

SORRY,Ishould of give a few more details .First of all i"m trying to kill two birds with one stone here.I have two TC"S, A HAWKEN AND A RENAGADE,so hears my plan .A replacement stock from pecatonica with a PURDY style (butt) as DAN PHARIS suggested and a 54cal GMbarrel in a1/70 twist.

As like a lot of you gents when i git a chance to go shoot i also like to make it worth my while ,so its at least 50 or so shots. So in all of this planing I"M
REALLY THINKING of me packing and shooting this gun as comfortable as possible .I"M ALSO thinking of my poor old right shoulder.
SO now that you know my plan ,would you go 1" or 15/16",by the way i also like to do a little hunting.

thankyou.walt

Considering it will be a fairly short barrel, I'd definitely go with a 1".

I would absolutely go with the heavier 1" barrel, if lots of shooting is anticipated.  I think you're going to want at least a nine-pound rifle, and you won't get that with the 15/16" barrel!

I doubt more than 8 1/4 to 8 1/2 pounds with 30" in a 1" replacement  bl. on either of those guns.  Seems to me the Renegade had a 1" bl., while the other one was 15/16". I take it, that's the thought on the two sizes.  I'd go with the Renegade and 1" x.54 - 30" to 32".
