Questions about RCA Vol 1 , Guns #53 &#54

Hello, I am planning a build that will be similar to #53 (I hope ), pgs. 228-231. I don't care for the patchbox and thought of doing a wooden patchbox. However, after giving #54 a good look, I would like to use that patchbox instead. I realize I'll have to make it myself, but wanted to learn how so I will give it a shot. However, on pg. 233 I can only see 3 screws holding the patchbox, is it possible that there are pins used also? Is it OK to use more screws? Also, I don't see where the patchbox release is at, is anyone able to explain the workings of the release etc... ?
I would also like to ask for examples/opinions of which ramrod pipes would be acceptable, as the only view I can see of the pipes is the entry pipe on gun #54 on pg. 235. Would it be logical or acceptable to base the pipes for building #53 on the one I see on the swivel gun? Thank you for your help and tolerance of new guy questions, James

Good choices there in using these guns as a basis for your next build.  I think RCA 53 is a little earlier, maybe 10 years or so, but could be wrong and even have it backwards.  It would look great with a wooden patchbox or the brass one.  I do not see evidence of pins (nails) on #54, but they could be used.  I'd make them of brass from the sheet metal used for the box.  When it comes to thimbles, I'd be tempted to use some Bucks County rifles of a later era for inspiration as I've always felt Antes was the progenitor or inspiration for later Bucks County guns.  Of course I'k not use the wide skirt on the entry thimble.  There is another later walnust-stocked Antes rifle out there and I'll see what can be done about getting some more info on thimbles.

Thank you Rich. I don't have the history of having handled or seen a lot of originals.  I'm trying to meld the characteristics  of the builder, not trying to copy, just give the feel of being from that shop.  Thanks for the help. James

The Antes rifles are a great choice for a project. As to your question about the release on #54. Mr. Antes has used a false screw as the release button on the top of the butt plate heel. The top of the butt plate return is pinned down. You can see the pin just below the stepped area at the thumb nail finial. There may be a section of hinge attached that is  screwed down but I doubt it is attached to the patch box surround. Looking closely at the photos I couldn't see any indication of nails being used at all. This section of surround is probably cast brass and is thicker and the three screws are enough to secure it with out additional help.

This is a prime example of why I'm glad you folks are around. I had not considered having the patchbox or surround of a greater thickness to reduce the possibility of a section popping up (a logical enough idea given experience, which I lack). Thanks for helping me along. James
