Thanks again folks for all the comments.
Skychief, the barrel is tapered 7/8" to just a little over 3/4 " at the muzzle. I would say that Don's pre carves are typical of the others I've done in terms of wood removal, meaning quite a bit needs to be removed. But that's a good thing IMHO. I do it with rasps/files, and then I switch to scrapers when I get close. Then I use sand paper for the final shaping.
This gun was pre-inlet for the Bob Roller lock but I know you could get it inlet for the Davis lock too. They might be the same shape. I got this kit a couple of years ago and just recently got around to working on it. Since then, I've learned that it is better to get any precarve done without the lock inlet so that's how I order them now. I've now done a couple like that. It's sounds counterintuitive, but it is actually easier to inlet the lock yourself. Especially on a Hawken style gun where there is almost zero latitude for error.
I'll see if I can take some more pics. If you want to send me your e-mail through a PM on the board here, I'd be glad to send them to you. I might try some pics inside to see if I can get some better pics that way.
