There is no maker's name that I can see anywhere. Your expertise would be quite appreciated!

Almost certainly a Sam Morrison. Look in the ALR Library. My rifle is there and I'd bet dollars by the same hand.

Morrison......that was my initial thought.    Overall architecture, football sideplate, and the lock itself looks like Morrison...............Don

One more note...

Old Sam typically signed his initials in very light script. For many years I thought my gun to be unsigned. Three years ago at the show in Lewisburg the light caught the barrel just right and I noticed something hiding under the patina that I'd not previously detected. I rubbed the area slightly and his signature began to show.

At that point I ceased because I didn't wish to destroy a century and a half of history to prove what I already knew. I'd suggest that your gun may very well be signed. This especially because the gun has some rather attractive features and was not by any means one of Sam's price leaders.

I'll insert the photo of my lock in your initial post for the benefit of our members.

Thank you for the expert opinions!
I googled Sam Morrison, and one of his pieces went for an insane amount at Julia some years back.

Not an insane price at all if the gun was correct. Unfortunately neither your or mine quite rise to this level. All the same you have a nice gun. Would you consider submitting it to the library for possible exhibit?
