I Would Appreciate A Few Opinions Please
« on: April 11, 2011, 03:58:14 PM »
I have an old longrifle that was converted from flint to percussion and the nipple is missing. I have thought about replacing he missing nipple to make it complete. I would like to hear your thought's. How much would the replaced nipple hurt the value of the rifle ? Thank You

Just my opinion, but if you do replace the nipple it should be steel, not one of those obviously new Ampco Metal (bronze) nipples.

The Ampco nipple is a turn-off to me as a collector. Not really a big  deal itself, but it indicates lack of thought in restoration & causes me to examine the rest of the gun more closely.

An old nipple would be nice, if you can find one.

No nipple at all? Hey, this gun hasn't been messed with ("Improved") by some collector. I want THAT one!

Do your best to use an old nipple, I have a box of original nipples, and I would be happy to give you one, the trick is finding one that would fit correctly.  That's hard to do without actually having the gun in hand.

Thank You for your replies, I have a old steel nipple that fit's. I was just not sure if I should replace the missing nipple or not.

No one spoke to your question of value. My opinion amongst many is that it would not change its value but I would heed the wisdom of "Fullstock" and replace it with a period one to keep its eye appeal and "originality." Nipples are usually readily available at any Antique Gun Show that includes muzzle loaders.
