Fred,
Don't believe everything you read in "The Pennsylvania Longrifle".
 
While what you describe might be the norm for a barn gun, the majority of rifles weren't barn guns, at least judging from remaining rifles.
And while most remaining rifles aren't golden age beauties, most seem to have some sort of patchbox and some brass doo-dads.
