Dixie flint lock
« on: April 24, 2011, 04:58:10 AM »
Nothing came up in a search, so what do most think of the Dixie flint  lock. No markings on it but it is the one with a little teet on the trailing part of the plate. It seems very strong, but the hole for the frizzen screw is wore oversize and the frizzen wobbles because of that. Everything else is tight. This is a lock only. Is the lock  worth re-doing the frizzen screw hole, or getting a new frizzen?. It seems like a decent lock . Thank you for any help or advise.

A frizzen is $25-$30, a lock is $150+.
If it has been used enough to wear out the hole; how much spark is left in it?
You could spend an hour to re-bush the hole to find out there's only 35 sparks left in the face. Frizzen do wear out.
My frizzen wobbled a bit when new, but as long as it keeps sparking for me.

For some reason these little foreign made locks seem to command a high price, much more than they are worth (IMHO). However they can be tuned to spark nicely, if you have one it would be worth putting a few bucks into.....Ed

I have an old Dixie mountain rifle with a 7/8" barrel that the frizzen does not spark very well. I really like the rifle.

Thank you for the replys. I took the frizzen screw out this morning and discovered everything is wore except the threaded hole. The hole in the frizzen is oversize, the hole that the frizzen screw goes through (outer) is wore and even the shoulder of the frizzen screw is wore. The lock was given to me because "the priming powder leaks out"( its no wonder). A frizzen and frizzen screw, and a little time to fill and re-drill the outer hole should be worth it. Thank you again for the input.
