Its a piece of metal that is the shape of the insert on one end and turned round on the other ..Like a square headed bolt . A hole was drilled  through the plate , the rounded portion of the insert went through the hole  and was braded on the back side . the plate had a grove  about 1/8 inch square that run from top to bottom of the insert area ..Like a key way on a shaft  .The insert had a 1/8 in square protrusion that fit in the grove in the plate ..This prevented the insert from rotating ..LouieParker

How does the steel insert dovetail in and have a stud? It would have to be two pieces wouldn't it?

Cmac ... Sorry I used a bad choice of words ..It was not dove tailed .Though I have heard that term used ..Hope my last post was not so confusing ..  LP

cmac....The top to bottom groove  in the butt plate   that I mentioned , was actually 1/8 deep and 7/32 wide .
If  you look closely at the photo of the plate from the side view   , the heel was not cut off straight . Had a slight v going  toward the muzzle . LP
