John Bumford of London reference material
« on: May 12, 2011, 04:22:07 PM »
Is there any good books or reference material available about John Bumford and his work. I see his rifles pictured occasionally.

He must pre-date 1850 as there is no listing in Boothroyd's Directory of British Gunmakers.

I have never seen any rifles but have seen a few pistols and fowling piece by the  Bumfords. Probably the one you are familiar with seeing is the second John who apprenticed under Thos. Hardwell in 1742, asst.1746' master in 1751 and 1756. Located at the sign of the golden blunderbus, St. George st. in the Minories, London. Was contractor.to.East India and Hudson's bay companies., died 1775 (Blackmore)
