touchhole size
« on: May 27, 2011, 02:17:26 AM »
Need some advice from experience.
Finishing up a big-bore flintlock fowler with a Chambers touchhole liner.  Ron Ehlert and others drill their liners out to 1/16".  For a 10 bore, is this plenty or a tad larger?
Thanks
Ryan

I'd leave it as-is. I noticed this past weekend my White Lightning liner vent has enlarged quite a bit with only around 1000 rounds through the rifle. This is a .62 with 100 gr. 3F Schutzen, so the pressure and heat is high.

I used to believe 1/16" when using 3f powder and 5/64" when using 2f. I run a 1/16" drill bit through the liner (white lightning) of my .62 trade gun after installing it, using 2f powder, ignition seems pretty fast, I see no reason to enlarge it. No missfires or hangfires, unless I get lazy. So, I would leave it at 1/16" and try it. chuck

If it does not work good at 1/16"  there is some other problem. If you REALLY don't like it at .062" then enlarge it to .070. If it causes problems then the problem is not in the vent diameter.

I agree with Dan, but if increasing the diameter. I'd increase gradually.  There are 2 numbered bits between 1/16 and .070.  I don't remember the number sizes, but they are .064 and .067.  I'm a big fan of clean vents.  I'd rather have a clean 1/16 than a fouled .070.

Much larger than 1/16" will affect accuracy. In my experience. Maybe not much, but some.

Thank you gentleman,
I will leave it as is for the first shots, and drill to 1/16" if needed and leave it at that.

When I built my first rifle in 1976 I followed the instructions that I found in Dixies catalog and drilled it with a 3/32 bit, very fast ignition but after a couple thousand shots it had a tendency to self prime.  I had a good close fit between the pan cover and frizzen so I just increased my load by about 2 grains to replace  the powder in the pan.  I don't recommend this this is just my experience.

I drilled liners 1/16th in  ,but on more recent builds I no longer use them, [ liners ] and instead , drill the barrel with a 5/64 drill.

I use Chambers White Lightning as it comes from Jim. Vent hole is 55 thousands and is very fast, I'll stay with it the way it is until there is a neeed to change. Can't see drilling just to drill.
