Finish a drinking gourd
« on: June 27, 2011, 09:58:47 PM »
I got a very nice gourd at Friendship last with a slice removed making a nicely handled drinking gourd. It is well dried and cleaned. How should it be treated/preserved for actual use with water, soup, and other liquids?   Lon

If used for cold liquids only, I use beeswax.  For soup and other hot liquids, leave it naked.  I understand that the oils seep into the pith and seal it (eventually).

I have read that some use a food-safe epoxy to coat gourds.

Any which way, gourds are cheap and disposable...

i use envirotex lite.. pour on finish, to seal cups and canteens. it is a 2 part epoxy that has the consistancy of maple syrup and covers good. it is self leveling. bar top finish, and is food safe when set. works for hot or cold liquids or even alcohol.....                                                   mark ewing
