Gouges

I was going to purchase a gouge or maybe two for roughing out a butt stock from a blank.  Any advice as to what sweep and width will work best?

It's kind of personal preference.  I use a 1" shallow one, and a 5/8" half round, as well as a curved spokeshave.  I have both inny, and outies.  I've seen Ian P Ratt use a half round molding plane, under the cheek while demonstrating at Dixon's, and someone else use a bowl skorp. (I think that's how it's spelt)  It's like a curved draw knife.

 You might want to consider the firmer gouges that Lee Valley/Veritas offers. There are five sizes and you can buy them individually. I have three of them and think that they are very good, especially to be so reasonably priced. If I were only going to get two, I would get the biggest and the smallest. You also need to make a mallet (or several) that you like.
