Vent liner placement ?
« on: June 16, 2011, 05:06:47 AM »
How do you all locate your vent liners?

Do you make sure that the edge (arc) of the liner misses the end of the breech plug?

-Or-

Do you drill the liner to "hit" the breech plug so that the vent is as close to the breech plug face as possible?

Is one better than the other in terms of ignition or other areas I may not be thinking of?

I have little experience with building, but, am jumping in with both feet, so, I appreciate your thoughts and the pros and cons where placement of the vent liner in relation to the breech plug is concerned.

Thanks, Skychief.

I like to place the liner so that the thread diameter just misses the face of the plug. This means I can unscrew the plug without having to remove/drill out the liner first.

I try to center the liner in the side flat, top to bottom.

I have lately started to use Tom Snyder's inside coning tools, which have been very satisfactory, especially in getting the touchhole a little closer to the plug. Properly done, the gun performs much as if it had a touchhole liner installed. Eventually the hole will erode, so at that time it can be lined, eh.

Thanks for the reply 'Sugar Maple'. ;)   I wonder if most builders do as you?

Much appreciated, Skychief.

I did it the same way, but added a little extra space for a bigger liner in case of an "oops".  Seems to work like it should, and I haven't had any fouling problems due to that additional clearance as far as I can tell -- even allocating for a 3/8" liner (I used a 1/4"), it's only an extra sixteenth of an inch; using a 1/4" liner and allowing for 5/16" would only be 1/32" difference.

I prefer to use the method Tom described above.    Have the threads of the liner just touch the front of the breechplug
face.  By doing this you don't have to file a groove in the front of the plug, which becomes one of those areas that is more
difficult to clean.   Determine where the touchhole will be before you inlet the lock.   Do not be concerned about whether
or not the fence of the lock is even with the breech end of the barrel.   Some will say this must be done......poppycock.

Skychief,
I also just mark placement of the touchhole liner, then inlet the lockplate & then drill  & tap.

Curt, do you miss the breech plug as well with the liner?

Thanks, Skychief
