Gunk on Breech Plug Threads
« on: June 21, 2011, 11:24:45 PM »
When installing a breech plug do you folks put anything on the threads.  I know in Peter Alexander's book he makes a couple of suggestions.  I am not one to ever remove my breech plug, unless it is for some emergency.  That being the case is anything added to the threads needed.

Some guys use choke tube lube, but it's nothing more than anti-sieze from the auto parts store, at a quarter of the price.  One tube (the smallest) of anti-sieze is a life time supply.  As the old Brill Creme ad says "A little dab will do you"

I always put on a little molybdenum grease when I'm assembling the rifle after browning/bluing the barrel.  It ensures there is no gauling of perfectly clean steel on steel, and also ensures that when and if you ever want to remove it, the plug comes out easily without upsetting its metal.  Breechplugs  don't have to be seated with a 28" wrench extension.
