My Next Project Gun

This gun is almost done. It's a .50 cal. rifled barrel tapered from 1.050" at breech to .830" at muzzle oct x 50" long.
The lock, side plate, trigger, nose cap & thimbles are home made.

It's heavy :/







I get this one done and I only have a .40 cal. rifle and a walnut fowler to finish. The .40 is as done as this one is. The fowler isn't :/

What kind of wood is it?
If you are going to use a finish, what are you planning on?
I'm always interested in the lock, sideplate, and the panels. I have been studying the examples shown on ALR trying to understand the aesthetics, symmetry, and proportions. Would you be so kind as to maybe add a couple of more photos of those areas if it's not too much trouble?

The wood is maple and I will be using aquafortis on it then linseed oil. I will get some more pictures up later today. All that's left to do is finish carving, apply the regent & oil, some simple engraving, drilling the vent liner hole and filing the sights. This gun was built by Salvo but never finished. It will be going on the auction block when it's done. His widow needs the room in the gun safe.
