What lock for a Committee of Safety musket?

Hi all,

I'm going to be building a Rev War musket and was wanting some suggestions for the lock.  It'll be patterned after a Rappahannock Forge / Committee of Safety musket.  I'm thinking about one of those Davis Colonial locks with some modifications, or a early Ketland, or Chambers Virginia round faced lock.  It needs to be fairly robust (big), and those were the ones that came to mind.  If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it.  Thanks!

Use a Bess lock and modify the shape slightly if you wish.
They used what they had or could make/repair easily.

I don't think you could go wrong with the Chambers Virginia lock, or maybe the Queen Anne (whoever offers it).  Those seem to be bold and impressive locks.

Agree with Dan on using an early pattern Bess if you can find one.  The Davis round face is  a natural; a Chambers is more high end and although outstanding, is above average quality export lock.  Early Ketland another good choice as you mentioned.  I heard Tip Curtiss has a round faced Dutch lock; hope he has one at Dixons.

Davis trade gun lock, remove the hammer bridle and run the hammer screw in from the front.

My impression was they pretty much looked like a Brown Bess, or maybe shared a lot fo the same parts.

You're right Stophel, they are big.  I might check out something from The Rifle Shoppe as well, as long as everything is in stock...  I'll also be playing around with the Davis lock, and looking to see what Tip might have at Dixon's.
