Southern Banded Powder Horn
« on: July 11, 2011, 04:37:54 AM »
Here is a banded horn that I just finished. Please feel free to critique.... the more input the better I can get.
It's about 15in long, 2 1/4" base, applied tip made from antler(3"). Base plug is walnut. Body of horn was finished in aquafortis, bands and tip died in Rit cocoa brown. The whole horn was buffed out in KIWI black shoe polish.

Thanks
Chris

I particularly like the tip and its diameter and taper relative to the taper of the horn and to the outside diameter of the bands,  nice continuation of the taper!

Thank you.... I liked the way the tip turned out also.... but I have a feeling that it might be a tad to thin.  I might end up wrapping it with thread to keep it from splitting.

Nice work. Is the tip two part? Instead of dying antler, try just aging it a bit. Try wiping a piece with Saddle Tan Oil base leather dye and then wipe it off immediately, then a coat of Brown Kiwi and rub with a rag or just the Brown and no dye, experiment. Take a look at these, you may have to scroll down.

Also on many Southern horns you will see the finial on the base flatter and larger almost like a mushroom. Ex below.

 Hope this is helpful.

Tim

Thanks for the info on ageing the tips... I think that those look better than the way I did it.  It is a 2 piece tip, maybe I can buff mine out some to lighten the color.  I like the looks of that base plug, I see what your talking about on the finial...  I'll try that next time around.

Thanks for taking the time to show me what I need to watch out for next time around.
