This is the first horn I ever bought....somewhat unique with the leather over the buttplug. Has anyone seen that before? Any thoughts on age?

vtbuck,
Doesn't look like it was used to attach a strap, maybe the plug has a crack that someone tried to bridge.

That's possible I suppose...I don't want to pull out all those nails to find out though. They certainly didn't spare the nails...no less than 22 altogether. All of the nails are the slightly rectangular type that I believe is fairly early. Any guessess on age?

vt,
Check out this link about dating nails;
http://www.journalofantiques.com/aug02/businessaug02.htm
To me it looks like the nails in the leather are of thhe 1835/1880 varity. Hard to say about the horn, but I wouldn't think any earlier than the nails.
