New Rocky Mountain Fur Trade Journal
« on: September 03, 2011, 12:02:00 AM »
While we are on the subject of American Traditions, (mine came and I am still enthralled with it all), let me bring another publication to your attention. It is full of good information on the subjects that we all cherish.
Volume 5, 2011 of "The ROCKY MOUNTAIN FUR TRADE JOURNAL" is now out; published by the Sublette County Historical Society and The Museum of the Mountain Man in Pindale, WY. It an eye catching pubication done with great care and it is beautiful.
The articles that have the greatest interest for this audience, I blieve, are the following:

St. George and the Dragon Sideplate...for the North American Trade Guns
"A Life Wild and Perilous": Death in the Far West among Trappers and Traders
Lock, Stock and Barrel: Arming the Far Western Mountaineers

There are numerous others as well, but these are the ones which struck my fancy.
The Journal can be purchased online from the Museum shop at the:
www.MMMuseum.com/trading post   should anyone wish to get a copy. Well worth it!!!

I notice that their current offerings only go back to 2007 and they are sold out of them.  Shortly after Charley died and the museum's future was in a state of flux, I bought one of the last remaining complete sets of journals.  This was in the late 90's.  They are a treasure trove of information, not only of the Rocky Mountain fur trade, but of the Fur Trade era in general.

They are boxed up somewhere and I haven't looked at them in years.  I would let them go to a serious student.  Not cheap though.

Tim, you may be right on this; I didn't realize that people would see it that way. There are two museums dedicated to the early West, and the fur trade. The major institution is the
Museum of the Fur Trade, located at Chadron, NB, (out in the Panhandle). Anyone who has not been there is missing out on an amazing experience. The second one is a bit newer and is located in Pinedale, WY, and is known as the Museum of the Mountain Man.
And while we're at it, if you are inspired to vist these, don't neglect the Buffalo Bill Museum at Cody, WY. If you can take in all these, there really isn't much else to be said or seen, any- where. There are also many rendezvous in the region and if time permits, it would add to your experiences to participate in some of those while you are out here.
