imo beech doent carve anywhere near the quality of good hard maple . but as ws said it would work for you to practice your layouts on . also if you  can carve beech  with good results then you  should ge even better results from  harder woods

I was thinking about a different boxwood, not poplar. There's a very dense hardwood used in making rules, planes, and handles also called boxwood. Beech is another one I would like to get my hands on for tool making!
