small day horns

Wanted to share two small horns a friend found rummaging through his fathers items.

7-1/2" around the curve


and yet another that has a very nice turned plug


these are about the same size the second is in much better condition

I'm a sincere fan of day horns, but I'm a hunter rather than a competitor or re-enactor.  All my day horns have no features for attachment because I drop them loose into my shooting bag.  A horn which holds 2 ounces of powder provides roughly ten 90-grain charges.  It just doesn't make sense to me to carry more powder in our wet climate, much less to have a horn dangling outside the bag for easy clacking on brush.

Any background on the origin of your horns?

I believe both those horns could have been carried on a bag. Both have strap attachments and are certainly large enough to hold a large supply of powder for a small caliber gun. I think people tend to want too large of a horn today.

 Very neat. Would it be possible to get a shot of the tip alone of the one with the rope carving on the base? The staple looks a little narrow and thick.
  The reason I ask is the tip looks like it has either incised lines at the very tip or the remnants of threads on it.

Brownbear; The only information we know about these is they were in the home of my friends deceased father. North central Indiana.

Tim; The mark you see appears to be scuffing of the end and suggests some type of tip or plug that fit over the end about 1/4" . any ideas what was there? The tip is about 7/16''  long and with only a slight taper.

Gotta love those old, full of character, horns, and these certainly qualify. The first horn looks like a home made hunting horn that many country folk made. The second one appears to be a late York County, PA horn, shop/factory made. It is a dandy. It may have had a screw tip on it since the spout seems to have threads on the end. It could easily be put back right; talk to Tim on the Forum here, and get his advice. Could be that he can do it for you. The leather flask held shot or balls. Nice combination of horns and shot flask. Used together, no doubt.
Hope that your friend goes back and looks around for the rifle; there obviously was one.
