New Web Site
« on: September 20, 2011, 03:44:00 PM »
To all who will look!
I am trying to get a new web site up and running and I need some feedback.
If you want to type   eitnierrifles.com   in the address bar at the top of your page.
If the site comes up look it over. If you have any trouble or other comments let me know. I am not trying to sell you anything. I am just trying to work the bugs out of this new site.
Thanks for your time!

Jerry the home page color combinations make difficult for ME to read.  To someone with more normal color vision it probably is not a problem.  Otherwise looking good

Um, yeah.

I'm going to look at this based on the research I've done on making usable websites, i.e., websites designed to actually communicate information and ideas.  If you chose the background and fonts/colors for aesthetic reasons, you did a good job--the page looks nice--but legibility is a serious problem.

The background picture makes it very difficult to read (or even see) the links across the top--I had to turn off the background in order to even see them all.  On a fairly consistent basis there isn't enough contrast between the font and background for the lettering to be legible, and the font you chose is one that is rather difficult to make out when parts of the letters are obscured.  The information on the contact page and links pages are totally obscured.

I'm not suggesting abandoning aesthetics, just that readability needs to be an equally-important criteria.  You know your work, you know what you're trying to say with the webpage; the user should come away with some idea of what you are trying to communicate.  After spending half an hour on your webpages, I have almost no idea.

When I pulled it up the words were colored in blue making it hard to read, but other than that I like it :)

Yep,  the text is very hard to read.  I high-lighted it and the text turned white, very easy to read.   Beautiful guns!!!

Highlighting didn't help me at all. Made it worse, if anything, cuz my settings have it turn red. Positively vanished. Honestly, if I'd come on this in a search, I'd abandon it as unreadable unless I knew for sure there was content there I really wanted. Great photos, and everything seemed to work as it should. Just make some other color settings.

I'll repeat some of what the others have said.  Some of the text is very difficult to read because of its color and/or background color.  Also, your "Available now" section is a bit confusing to me.  At the top is listed "Hand forged butt plates", yet there are no photos in that section of the buttplates.  Of those things that you do provide photos of, there are no prices.  Perhaps that was deliberate?

OK, the pic at the top of the home page is pretty cool, but that silhouette is what grabs the eye--not the lettering of your name.  I'm not saying make "EITNIER RIFLES      IRON MOUNTED SOUTHERN GUNS" black, but maybe a darker green, something like a British racing green.

There is nothing consistent to show that the links within the page are links.  One way to deal with this would be to increase the space between the picture at the top, and the blocks of text below.  In the increased black space, you could put your links: all the same color--and definitely switch to a serif'd font like Times New Roman.  It looks like you'll need two lines for the links within the page, so center-justify the second line of links (otherwise there is a tendency to overlook them).

HOME   FROM THE GUN SHOP     FROM THE BLACKSMITH SHOP     OTHER THINGS     FOR SALE
AVAILABLE NOW     CONTACT     LINKS

You might want to do something with the headings on the various pages ("From the Gun shop" and such) so they are consistent, and to show that they are a part of the Eitner Rifles webpage.  Maybe something like:

From the Gun Shop
EITNIER RIFLES
IRON MOUNTED SOUTHERN GUNS

with the font a few points larger for "EITNER RIFLES" than the other two lines.

If that works, I'd set up a template and do all the other pages off that template--but that sort of depends on what software you're using to set up the page(s).  Being lazy, I use a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, and templates are the easiest way for me to handle something like that.

On the "Welcome" message, ditch the black highlighting, and just have the lettering in white or near-white on the background color.  That should increase readability without compromising your design.

I copied and pasted the site name from Jerry's post and it popped right up. White on black is much more readable. I'd move the row of buttons down as suggested above, and perhaps make it a contrasting background color to attract attention and create a separating "line" between the top graphic and the introductory text. Coming along! This is a great way to check on the quality and user friendliness of a new site, BTW.

Hey, if Mark Thomas says you are good then you are! :)

I get the same thing as Robbie. At one time I used Geocities and Yahoo had me switch to Yahoo Site Builder. Works great for me.

Click this link:

I am still having trouble reading the following links - "from the Gun Shop" and "From the Blacksmith Shop", other than that everything looks good to me.

When Mark Thomas likes you and your work, you are a good guy and you do good work.

Jerry,
Go to your CSS file under header and change

min-height: 225px; to 240px.

That will shift your Navigation Bar down a little so you can read it.

No charge.

Rick

I would like to thank everyone who has helped on this web site. I think that is a lot better now. If you have not looked for a while type   eitnierrifles.com   in the address bar at the top of your page. Now if I can get it on a search engine so it will be easy to find. Any other comments are welcome.
THANKS!
