Touch hole liner on a round barrel breech?
« on: October 09, 2011, 10:30:52 PM »
What do you guys do when the touch hole is shot out on a round barrel breech?    I have installed touch hole liners on octagonal breeches but can't use standard liners if the surface isn't flat.

Thanks.

Even a round breech usually has a flat area at the vent location so that the pan and frizzen will make a seal. Whether or not this flat is large enough for a vent liner, you would have to measure and decide.

If there was not a flat , I suppose I would install it and file it to to the contour of the barrel...but generally there is a flat.

File a flat on the breech end and use a small liner. Otherwise it is hard to get the lock to seal against the barrel. IE it will touch at one point and not in another, especially if the pan is deep. Then fouling will end up in the lock mortise even if it does not leak powder.

Thanks for the advice.   Makes sense .   I have a spare small liner in my odds box.     I will file a flat on the breech and give it a try.

You may have to inlet the lock a touch deeper, or use a metal/leather shim to fill the gap.

If there is no flat, I don't think I would bother to make one. If you have shoot it enough to need to replace the liner and its been working fine up till now, I would just replace and file to the existing contour. As Tom said, messing with the barrel to lock fit will open up other problems.

I agree with Dan, if I was building it from new...it would have a flat.

Ya. Just install a liner & file it back to the old surface.
