I realize this may be heavy. If you look at the weights of such long guns in books many are quite light. I have handled a few and like the way they balance. Both of my rifles are around 11 lbs too. If it stays under that I'm okay with it and if it doesn't I will attempt to sell to someone that likes a heavier gun. As for packing I have a 1 ton van.

Eleven pounds!  About 3 1/2 pounds too heavy for me!   :D
When a reenactor says "They didn't write everything down"   what that really means is: "I'm too lazy to look for documentation."

i agree with Mike . longer barrels are not that big of issue to load .
i also have a 52 inch 54 cal barrel on my Hudson Valley .
yes it way under bored for a HV . but thats what i wanted .
so IMO not a big issue unless your trying to  stay HC

Personally I think its alittle heavy . But  everyone who has held it , comments that  its light . Well except Jerry H , LOL  . But he is old and cant shoot anyway LOL .
just kidding Jerry

what is a big issue thats not often thought about is the vapors that come off these longer barrels .
literally on a hot day and after just a few shots , the front sight  near disappears.
Thus it’s a real trick to keep the barrel as cool as possible

Here is one.  It is losely based on #14 Kindig which is a 56 inch barrel smooth bore rifle in the typical Lancaster style.  This one has a 55.5 inch barrel, 0.508 caliber, octagon to round, hand made by me but using steel - not wrought iron, completely hand forged wrought iron lock - strictly 18th c here, no modern threads.  I like wood patch boxes too.  Make an offer if you want it - its yours.

One of my favorites is an early Virginia style. Just don't know how historically correct it would be with the long barrel and iron mounts. I may just build what I like but I wanted to research the possibilities

Save your "I'm waiting on a... barrel " for a project that you've almost forgotten about (or almost ready to.)

There's an Early Virginia smooth-rifle in the Hurricane-Nord Contemporary Artisans Gallery

It's in stock... It has reliable ignition... Mid-size, so it's guaranteed to save on powder... It's probably even in the color that you want... And, you can start fondling, er... driving it now  ;)

It's a long, limber, 9 pound, does everything you ask of it, southern smooth-bored sex machine.

Why do guys always look on the other side of the fence??

Good luck!!

I was considering either a smoothbore or smoothrifle, but was curious as too the authenticity of a smoothrifle with a barrel that long. I do not have the barrel yet but I am expecting it soon. Just curious as to what others thoughts may be on it. I have seen plenty of pictures of original fowlers that long but few smooth rifles

#14 in Kindig's book, used to inspire the gun above, is a great example of a long barreled smooth rifle with, of all things, a round barrel IIRC.

I've a .50 cal rifle with a 50" rifled barrel. Don't know who made the barrel but Salvo made the gun.
It's muzzle heavy like crazy.
