Can I see some pics of the lock mortise area. I have been told "all J.P. Beck rifles have a space between the flash fence and stock".

I don't know about 'All JP Becks have space between fence and stock', but it's not unusual at all. Some fences line up with the breech, and others don't. It's a function of how long the breechplug is and where the touch hole can be drilled.

There are many very subtle things that make a Beck rifle a "Beck"  Whether the wood touches the back of the fence is probably the very least of them.

I would have to do some looking but I am sure you will find them both ways.
I don't like the way the gun looks with the fence very far from the breech of the barrel so I avoid it.
If trying to do a "bench copy" then its necessary to maintain this since it will change the way the gun looks to some extent since setting the lock forward or back 1/4" or even more with some modern breech plugs moves the lock position in relation to the wrist and everything related to the lock will be moved as well and the copy is thus distorted.
