There are a coupl JP Beck rifles in the Library on this site. One is over the top on carving in my book and none better to my thinking. Here is the link

You cant beat the books Rifles of Colonial America (RCA) I & II  for reference on this issue.

Here's one that I don't think has been published.

It is amazing how many variations there are of the carving on a "Whale Tail Beck."   That one has some nice additional flourishes.   Good photos for someone wanting to duplicate the carving.

Love it, thanks for posting the images.

Is the edge of the butt plate slightly proud of the edge of the stock and rounded? I've never noticed that before. Or do you think that is because of normal wear?

Beautiful rifle, Great photos.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Micah, That bit of misfit is most likely due to wood shrinkage. It is very common on originals.

Thanks for posting the pics Gary! That's a fine looking rifle!

The tang carving photo that Gary posted is pretty typical of Beck.  Every job was different but many were modifications of that design.   The photos of the guns in the Library give excellent examples.   What I found interesting was the butt plate on the gun that Gary posted.  It's almost atypical for Beck who used the same basic butt plate that can be seen on the two guns in the Library for most of his later rifles.
