Fine Day in the Woods.
« on: December 24, 2011, 11:56:12 PM »
Yesterday afternoon I grabbed my .36 SMR and headed for the squirrel woods.  They're more active in the mornings but I wanted to sleep in.  True to form I only saw three.  About dark a guy came along and decided to give me the once over.  I could only see a patch of white but that was enough.  Great way to spend a day in the woods.

I'll also take this opportunity to wish all the the forum a happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous new year.  And in case there are friends who don't necessarily celebrate the religious observance,  may you have an enjoyable holiday season.  And to all, may Santa fulfill all your wishes - he and I are not on the best of terms these days. ;D

As often said, The worst day in the woods is better than the best day at work!! That's why it's called HUNTING and not KILLING.

Hanshi try this one with the bushytails sometime. Skin and quarter meat.Soak in saltwater for one night. Next day rinse and apply salt and pepper. Put on the open flame over the fire. Use beechwood, for the fire so as to smoke and cook meat at same time. They are done after 2 quarters of football. I have had a lot of bushytails and none were ever better.

Last days of deer season in our woods and I was sorely tempted by a fat bushytail last eve. He sat on a log about 25 yds. forever offering altrnately both profiles of his head and I don't know how many times I snapped the set trigger on his head (without cocking hammer). My restraint payed off and after a while a deer showed up. Now I have a little more meat for the freezer. I convinced myself there will be lots more squirrel days. They are a great challenge with the flint. Enjoy!
