54 Cal. Flintlock Log Rifle
«

To those interested there is a .54 Cal. Flintlock Log rifle for sale on Gun Broker.
It is new, unfired.
I have no interest in this rifle, but wanted to let those interested in it, to have a look at it.
They are not common.
It appears to be a round ball gun.
I hope this helps.

Old Ford,
I looked at all the muzzleloading listings and didn't find it. Do you have an item number or what heading it was listed under?

Smokin', the link or auction number of the ended auction is
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=263084928
Per the auction description, "This is a 54 caliber flintlock log rifle built to shoot in the over the log competition. It has a Siler lock and a 41 inch 1 in 66 twist octagon barrel of unknown make. It has a Lyman 17A target front sight and a Lyman or Redfield target peep rear sight. This rifle has never been fired. The owner has medical issues and was unable to shoot it after it was finished." There are several closeup pics in the full auction description.
If the link doesn't work and you have a gunbroker account, you can log-in and do an advanced search on the term "log rifle" in completed auctions and find it.

What do you think, Mark? A peep on a chunk ("log") rifle? Looks like someone has been shooting bench with this gun.

Kermit,
I have to agree. It doesn't look like a temporary sight mount for testing either. Can't tell what the front might be.

The front sight looks like a cheap Lyman globe sight mounted on an aluminum base. It could be a low Sharps sight, but the front sight's shape tells me it's a Lyman sight. Can't tell what the rear sight is. Neither sight is legal for chunk as far as I know.

The rifle looks to be to heavy for "light" bench and certainly isn't wht you would want to shoot in "heavy" bench. Won't qualify for chunk and with the cant block wasn't intended to be a buffalo, cross stick, rifle. Must be one of those new "tweener" rifles, falls between evrything.

Could be someone just built it to shoot by himself, not for competition. Also with a change of sights it would be legal for chunk, wouldn't it? Sights are easily & quickly changed.

Daryl,
Absolutly correct. Other than the sights it loks like it would make a good chunk gun. If the cant were removed, for comvenience, it would make a good cross stick rifle also, with the existing sights.
