Another mistake another fix
« on: December 07, 2011, 05:31:52 PM »
Well the learning continues!!!! I got two chips out of my stock due to careless handling. They were in an area that I couldn't get a clamp on to hold them in place while the glue dried. Gave it some thought and decided to use some 1/8" bungie cord that I use in my leather work. Tight bonded the pieces to the stock, perfect match, and wrapped tight with bungie cord and tied it off. All is good and I'll be back to working on it tonight. Im not even close to done and yet I've already learned a zillion things that I wont do again on my next build which is already underway with the parts collecting part. Nothing but good. Frank

Frank,

Bungee cords - what a great idea!  I used a bicycle tire innertube cut to a 1' wide ribbon when confronted with a similar situation.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Surgical tube also as it is easy to apply and tie off with simplest tension knot.  Don't have problems with it sticking to glue or putting fibers in the glue either.  Works good for regluing chair leg braces and holding all sorts of irregular shapes.

I've used all sorts of things to clamp depending on what it is clothpins work good for replacing thin stuff or copper wire. If you want a tough wood peg use a chop stick ,you need to be eating healthier food any way.
I repaired a Chinese match lock pistol once and the barrel pins were wood one was missing so I used a chop stick, thought that was appropriate, a Chinese guy that interpreted the writing on the barrel thought it was funny.
The only screw on the entire pistol was the breech plug about three turns to the inch. I had to make a brass spring for it.
