I purchase SS range rods at Friendship and personally do not like 1/4" for anything that a 5/16" can be used for. In my 40cal, I use a 5/16" and a nylon muzzle guide/protector. Works fine.

I use 5/16" aircraft stainless (whatever that is) rod for .32 & .45 and 3/8" drill rod for .40, and sometimes the .58's and 1/2" nylon for .58, .62 and .69. I also use the 1/2" nylon for my 16 bore double and 12 bore pump shotguns.
