What can I use this barrel for?
« on: July 18, 2012, 05:31:51 PM »
I've been given a 33" long, strait octangonal, jukar barrel. It measures 0.885 across the flats. Caliber 0.45 . It's never been shot, thank goodness. The owner had installed a drum crooked. I have to cut about 0.8" off and rebreech the barrel.

Any suggestion for what type of rifle to build?

Best regards
Rolf

A half stock plains rifle, half stock Midwest rifle (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois or Michigan), later percussion German hunting rifle half stock or full stock.

I am building a Southern Mountain Rifle from mine.

Those barrels are amazinly accurate.
I went a full stock. Looks great. Still have to finish the trigger guard inlet. I went proud with the contour as I can make it slimmer later.
I had to recrown my muzzle.

A slightly scaled-down Leman trade rifle; perfect for whitetails in thick cover.

That's a good starting point for a youth or lady size rifle.

I personally wouldn't waste
time making a gun around such a barrel. Just because you have it doesn't mean you have to use it.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

IMHO make some pistol barrels from it.  With your talent and imagination I'm sure you could come up with some nice ones.

Guys,

I'm in agreement with Curtis.  Cut it into 3 pistol barrels, make them into octagon to round with a file.  They should make really nice pistol barrels.

I'm with Mike on this one. I'd simply throw it away.

Ah come on Daryl, waste not want not  :) As mentioned above 3 good pistol barrels, youth rifle, ladies rifle, cut down mountain rifle. I once saw a neat NC mountain rifle that someone had cut the stock and barrel down to around 32 inches, it was a neat looking gun for hunting.
**opps, bad memory, I just looked the length of that barrel and it was 35.5 inches not the 32 that I remembered**

I saw a really neat rifle with a mule ear lock and a CVA Blazer barrel that had been rebreeched.

The one and only CVA barrel I examined (metallurgically) was nice, soft ductile 1015 steel, kind of like a very clean wrought iron.

Have no idea about accuracy.

Pistol barrels would be good for me, because with my shooting I'd have nothing to complain about.

I would go with the 3 pistol barrels. Last longer that way!   ;D
