Shreckengost rifle
« on: January 02, 2012, 07:25:43 PM »
hi, i recently was asked by my friends father to do a little research on a gun that he had inherited a few years ago. the gun was  handed down through four generations of his family that he knows of and after a little research i have ended up here. the top of the gun is engraved with the shreckengost name and it looks very similar to all other shreckengosts that ive seen on this site. i was wondering if you would help shed some light on this particular gun. from just a quick look at the gun i can tell you that the barrel is approx. 40 in. all hardware seems to be brass, the compartment on the stock is oval shaped, just above the trigger i was able to make out pittsburgh PA and P13. any information you could give would be greatly appreciated, thanks and we hope to hear from you!!

Fort Scott,
Suzkat is the man you need to contact,I would assume you will hear from him sometime soon. He is a Schrekengost descendant.

It is almost impossible to make meaningful comments without seeing pictures of the rifle. If possible, can you post pictures of both the front and back sides of the rifle, showing from the butt plate out to about 8 to 10 inches past the lock plate area? A picture of the signature would also be a great help. With those pictures, we can see the stock's shape, or architecture, and better estimate its manufacturing date by comparing to known guns. We can also see the quality of the stocking, mountings, and engraving to better establish the quality level of the gun and if it has been repaired or altered during its working life. These rifles are all individually made, no two are exactly alike, so to understand what you have and provide meaningful comments on its age, quality, amount of originality, etc., we really need to see pictures of the gun.  Shelby Gallien

I spoke with the gentleman who posted this.  He does not have digital pictures of the rifle.  I then spoke
to the owner of the rifle who said he will have someone take and send photos to me.  I'll post them
when the email comes in.  From the description, this would be a later period rifle made as a hunter.
It has a toilet bowl patchbox and no other inlays other than the sideplate.  The buttplate is missing.
Barrel is signed Shreckengost.  Full stock, small caliber.  Owners grandfather was from Clarion
PA near Putneyville where the rifle was made.  This could be a product of Wm's son Lincoln.  There
is no engraving on the patchbox.  Not ruling out reuse of a Shreckengost barrel by another maker until
I see photos.  Why would builder take the time to engrave Shreckengost on the barrel and not do any
other engraving on the rifle?

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.
