Swiss or German gun on Flintriflesmith web
« on: January 15, 2012, 07:42:35 AM »
Some of you might enjoy looking at the photos of a mid-18th Century smoothbore I posted on my web site. It has a lot of details in the carving that could be found on an early longrifle. http://www.flintriflesmith.com/Antiques/Swiss%20or%20German%20Gun.htm

Here are a few samples of the many pictures I posted.

I didn't measure the bore but it is relatively small --- probably less than 62 caliber (20 bore). The barrel walls are relatively thick as though it was intended for shooting ball. But, there is no rear sight so who knows what it was really for.

Gary, thank you very much for bringing this, and the other superb guns here for all to see. The cheek carving on this gun is somewhat like the motif used by I. Berlin on his finer, earlier pieces. The wreath like design with cross hatching within is quite elegant, as is so much else about this gun. The rear pipe alone makes the gun a rarity. Again, thank you for posting these.
