Ok, I'll be the bad a___.   Must admit my first 'build' ended up hidden in the attic, and later efforts not much improved, although they do shoot..!

If I pick your rifle apart too much just take it as the ramblings of an ol guy....that doesn't really know what he's talking about..

I'll say also simply turn that frt sight around.  You'll get more glare the way it is than you will care to have.., brass hardware w/o some lines cut into it looks chintzy to my eye, so consider having some simple lines cut into them.,.  sideplate, trikker guard, b plate return...., that barrel tang screw looks as though it stands a tad too tall,  the cheek piece appears to my eye to be a bit overpowering in length 4inches max..  I am used to seeing concave butt plates rather than convex....Better folks than I may have more to add. ::)

Now then, don't turn to drink or fight with your better half or lady love over what I have said, since I am only the 212 lb gorrilla in the group. ;D

Jeez, almost missed it.... Too neat way too neat you must crud up your work duds and throw more stuff around the shop... Kidding just kidding :)

Cory, that's a wonderful first rifle - or tenth!  My first half dozen and many since those, were not nearly as nicely made.  Ya done good.

Roger, I think the butt plate is flat, but the convex side of the stock makes it appear convex in the photo.  I agree with Roger, that the tang screw needs to be reduced in its dome...just a gentle roundness goes a long way...a very minor thing.  I'd like to have seen longer bevels filed into the side plate.  See how they are filed into the lock plate...similar to that.  I disagree bout engraving.  I'd rather see plain brass than badly done engraving.  But engraving is something you must try.  When you are pleased with it, then you can add it at any time, or on your next dozen or so rifles.
You were wise to select the parts set you did.  You've done a nice job.  My advice is, do not sell the rifle for any amount.  If you do, you'll regret it almost instantly, and forever.  You need to keep your first rifle.  It'll mean a lot to you in 40 years.

Looks good my first one had a water pipe barrel and a pine stock ,shot baked mud balls,  firecrackers for a propellent, or china berries if the baked mud balls weren't in supply.

CJ,

That is an exceptional first! I really like the wood color, and everything looks well executed and lively.

Great Job!

Thanks everyone.

Roger, ramble on all you like.  I appreciate the info.

I am going to take the time to fix tthe tang bolt anfter giving it a second look. And I will turn the front sight around especially if it helps with glare.

I am going to start practicing engraving soon, but may never apply it to this one.  This one is a keep to, I made it based on my dimentions and wants.

I think I stated 'have" some engraving cut into those brass parts.  Meaning if Cory is not in to engraving he could consider a friend that can and would do it .  I have seen more than a couple of rifles that looked great 'from across the room; but a closer look illustrated the fact that poor engraving or carving ruins an otherwise fine rifle.... ;)

Cory Joe - nice work.  It can be dificult to do stepped wrist guns and get the correct lines and spatial relationship of the parts so that it makes a nice visual impact - you did a really nice job on this one. To me it looks right in line with what your concept flor the rifle was intended to be.

Good work

Hello all.

I went toshoot my Moravian rifle this weekend.  The image below is of the very first shot.  Notice the barrel is not flying off through the woods.  That is a good thing.

I was shooting offhand and was just 2 inches and to the left of the bullseye.  I was tearing up the detergent bottles offhand at 30 yards.  I backed it up to 45 yards and propped it up on a fence posts.

I am used to shooting smoothbores.  This rifle has a nice cracking sound to it.

Coryjoe............Nice job on a difficult build.  But, there are a few things I would have done differently.   You should have
studied the few Christian Springs guns that are shown in RCA and designed a better side plate.  The one you made sure
doesn't flow with the rest of the gun.  Also, I would have done the trigger differently.   Why so far forward, and why the
crazy forward angle?   Remember, these are the crazy ramblings of an ol' coot.............Don
