Trigger for mule ear lock
« on: January 28, 2012, 02:00:10 AM »
I have some parts laying around enough to make a small chunk gun for my grandson. 1 1/8 X 31 X .35 cal and a mule ear lock.I need to get or make a trigger fo it. Seeing that the sear is tripped 90 degrees from a regular lock I need help finding one or a sketch of the trigger. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think a regular trigger would work. Thanks for your help.

Michigan......I built a saw handle pistol, using a mule ear lock.  Due to the configuration of such a beast, the lock was
placed toward the rear of the pistol and the trigger was about 2" in front of the sear.   I made a trigger with a straight
bar above it, and pinned it at the top.   I then made a round bar that went horizontal in a groove made for it, going from
the trigger straight back to the sear.    When you pulled the trigger, it pushed the bar backwards onto the sear.....
simple, ah.    Depending on how you built your pistol, you could use a trigger like this, eliminating that transfer bar....

The way  I did it for this gun was to make the trigger mortice clean through to the barrel tang and hung the trigger just under the tang with a cross pin through the stock.
Hope this gives you some ideas.  Good luck!      Bob Reader

this is a drawing of the trigger used on the Navy Arms Poor Boy Muley..

If you made the lock something like this one.. if you look at the secondary ( lower )sear arm, it's actually a "Bell-crank" mechanical element!!  it allows you to use a normal trigger and it converts the upward motion, into a sideways push that compresses the actual sear bar!!

In it's simplest form a slotted trigger bar, pinned high  in the stock.. the horizontal sear goes into the slot and as the sear/trigger is swung rearward, the sear bar rides in the slot and trips the lock.. IF I could find it, I have a picture of a Tingle, that shows the lock mortise with just such a slotted trigger bar?? ( I'll keep looking)

Hope this helps??
