Looking for F. Onwan
« on: February 20, 2012, 09:21:33 PM »
A friend contacted me about a percussion period longrifle w/ full patchbox, Goucher lock, D/S triggers, brass mounted, about 56 cal. deep rifling, 40" bbl.,  signed F. Onwan.   I checked Frank Seller's book but could find no listing for the name.  Has anyone ever heard of this maker, or have any information on such rifles.

Thanks Ron

Sounds like an F. Orwan gun to me. Not exactly sure where he worked, but think that it was somewhere around York County in PA. Whisker has some photos of Orwan's work in his books, if I am not mistaken.
Show us some pictures!

Thanks Dick,
I have never laid eyes on the gun, so have no photos.  I just got done talking to the guy who owns it, and it sounds like the gun was a later period percussion, although signed in script not stamped with a makers name.   I checked and found that two Orwans worked in Perry Co.,  F. and F & C. Orwan.   Good call on your part.   Thanks again.
